About

We are a community who want our monthly household shopping to do more good than harm – to ourselves, to our environment and to our communities.
This means that we try to source products that, as far as possible,

  • are good for our bodies and minds
  • are free-range / organic / all natural
  • are local, and that
  • protect and give back to the community, environment and animals from whom we benefit

When we cannot tick all the boxes we tick as many as we can.

We are not a shop or distributors for our partners. We do not get paid by the producers to sell their food. We are not a retailer. We are not a “budget” buying club. Our aim is not to find the cheapest version of whatever we’re looking for. Our prices may sometimes be higher than your local supermarket, although for the most part we find that they are lower. Our aim is to become healthier and more responsible consumers.

How It Works

To buy through Local & Lekka you will need to sign up as a member on our website.

Orders need to be completed one week prior to collection day. Reminders and updated information on goods will be sent via email and occasional Whatsapp.
All orders need to be paid for via EFT – no cash is accepted on collection. Your first order will need to be paid for before collection day, thereafter you may pay on receipt of invoice within two days of collection. Please pay timeously so that we can pay our suppliers on time.

Collection days run once a month (second Friday of each month) from my home between 2-6pm. Please bring your own bags/boxes and cooler bags/ice bricks for meat and dairy products. If you cannot collect on this day then we advise you do not order for that month as we do not have capacity to store produce.

A small markup is added to all the produce and food we co-ordinate. This is kept as low as possible and is there to cover the time, energy and resources required by the facilitators to co-ordinate the ordering and distribution.

This is a HUMAN-run buying club, not a shop. That means that if the drought causes a shortage of milk, or the butter tastes different each season, we accept the realities our farmers and suppliers face. (Obviously if you’ve paid for an item and it doesn’t arrive you will be reimbursed, and we’ll apologise for the disappointment).

How It All Started

Local & Lekka is 100% inspired (and encouraged) by the Good Food Clubs run in and around Cape Town. These clubs originally began some years ago from one person’s journey to source and provide healthier, locally produced and sustainable food for her family.

Now, with the blessing of the original Good Food Club network, two long term members (Sarah and Penny) are kick-starting Local & Lekka in the hopes of expanding this movement of more responsible buying.
